One of the most influential artists I studied this year was Jeff Soto. Jeff Soto is a famous street artist, who creates large amazing works of art using the spaces around him to create large, earthy works. His works incorporate bright bold pictures that captivate the mind and leave you wondering what his inspiration was.
As a child Soto learned a lot about nature and animals due to his father's interest in the outdoors and taxidermy. He began to show an interest in drawing and painting at a young age, and his parents activities outdoors inspired his work. When he was a student in college he became bored with the graffiti mold that everyone used, and took it to another level creating portrait styled paintings. An example of this is his work, "Sea of Change." This features a blue whale in the foreground (left). The work describes the different spectrums of life one being bold and the other being neutral. The whale represents the sea while the paint brush can show that anything can change. Personally, this is by far my favorite piece because of the depth and meaning behind it. I emailed Jeff Soto and asked him what I could do to better my art. " Just paint a lot, draw a lot. Meet other people who are into art, and be very careful out there painting on things!!" This shows his personal experience in his genre of work, he encourages others to step out of their comfort zones and feel free to express themselves.
